HOW TO PAINT BRAKE CALIPERS WITHOUT MAKING MISTAKES?
Have you ever wondered how you can paint the brake calipers of your car achieving a truly professional result without making any mistakes?
WHAT DOES THE MARKET OFFER?
The market offers German products applied by brush, or spray cans of dubious quality at such a low price that you start wondering whether they are the same ones sold at the local hardware store.
And that is exactly the case. Most of the time these sprays are nothing more than ordinary paints with a nicer label that ultimately deliver very little value.
THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS
A few days after applying the paint, it starts peeling off in flakes — or worse, it stays on but changes colour and fades, as the pigment cannot withstand high temperatures.
We can tell you that painting bare metal is not a simple task and always requires a product called PRIMER. Primer has an outstanding ability to bond to metal and prevent rust, which is why it is the best way to prepare the caliper surface before applying the colour coat.
Colour paint is beautiful and vibrant, but it does not have the adhesive strength of primer.
As for why the colour fades, the answer lies in the fact that the temperature is too high and the pigments cannot hold up because they are not truly high-temperature rated.
In this article we will see how to avoid all these problems.
SO WHAT SHOULD I USE?
Simply use qualified products that should not cost less than €17–18 in the case of sprays, and €35–38 for professional 2K paints. If you see lower prices, you can be certain it is not a genuine high-temperature paint suitable for restoring brake calipers on cars or motorcycles.
SOME EXAMPLES OF QUALIFIED MADE IN ITALY PRODUCTS
Whether you need a spray or a 2K paint, you can use Kustom Service products, which are not only designed to withstand temperature variations but also resist very aggressive chemical agents such as oil and petrol.
These special paints dry quickly and within just 30 minutes they are already resistant to petrol and other chemical substances.
You can find these paints at this LINK.
IS IT BETTER TO USE 2K PAINT OR SPRAY?
The choice depends entirely on the skill of the applicator and the type of work to be done.
If you have good manual dexterity and the right equipment, the catalysed liquid version will give better results. If you are a beginner or do not have the right equipment, the Kustom Service spray is an excellent and highly performing option.
Now that we understand what to use, let's move on to the actual painting phases.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE THE CALIPERS BEFORE PAINTING?
Before starting to paint the calipers, they must be cleaned very thoroughly using a powerful degreaser. An aeronautical-grade degreaser works perfectly and can be found in the dedicated degreaser section. It can be applied by brush or spray, but brush application is definitely better as it allows more dirt to be removed.
It is also advisable to sand the surface with 400-grit dry abrasive paper. In this specific case, sanding is carried out after degreasing, and once sanding is complete, a final degreasing pass is applied.
PROTECTING THE DISCS AND OTHER MECHANICAL AREAS
Using newspaper or, if available, masking paper and automotive masking tape, all areas surrounding the calipers can be effectively protected.
PAINTING
Starting from the principle that painting metal correctly requires thorough preparation — if you do not want the paint to peel over time, a primer must be applied to the bare metal.
Primer serves two purposes:
- It gives the entire caliper a uniform, light-coloured base
- It prevents rust from forming beneath the paint over time, which would cause the colour to detach
As the first step, apply the primer if you have it and want a perfect result. Apply a light coat first, then after one minute apply a heavier coat. If satisfied with the result and the colour is uniform, leave it for 15 minutes to dry. If not fully satisfied, wait just 5 minutes and apply another coat.
At this point, wait 15 minutes for it to dry and proceed with the colour coat.
The colour is applied in exactly the same way as the primer. Apply a light coat first, then after 5 minutes a heavier coat. If the result is satisfactory, stop — otherwise wait 5 minutes and apply another coat.
Always shake the spray cans thoroughly before use.
HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT BEFORE USING THE CAR?
Wait exactly 12 hours before using the car, and 24–48 hours before washing the wheels and consequently the calipers.
DO I REALLY NEED PRIMER?
If primer exists in bodywork, there is a very specific reason for it.
However, if you are not concerned about long-term durability because you do not plan to keep the car for long, then you can skip the primer.
But if you want to do a truly professional job, the money spent on primer will be the best investment you ever make.
Primer not only ensures the work lasts over time but also enhances light colours dramatically. Think of Brembo red or Modena yellow — applied directly to bare metal they appear slightly darker and less vibrant, whereas applied over a light base they become incredibly brilliant.
Using primer is therefore not only a matter of safety and professional quality, but also a way to make your calipers look even better.
